Colombo | October 14, 2025 — Former State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, who was arrested by the Bribery Commission on corruption charges, has been granted bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.

The court ordered his release on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three surety bails of Rs. 2 million each. A travel ban was also imposed, restricting the former minister from leaving the country during the ongoing investigation.

Case Background

Rajapaksa was remanded in connection with allegations that he influenced compensation officials to unlawfully obtain Rs. 8.85 million for a building and property belonging to the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority in the Sewanangala area, which were damaged during the recent ‘Aragalaya’ protests.

Bail Decision

The Magistrate considered:

  • A medical report submitted by the defense
  • The fact that Rajapaksa had been held in remand for 70 days
  • A statement from investigators indicating the probe was in its final stages
