Sri Lanka has formally honoured eight foreign naval vessels — including two from India — for their critical assistance during Cyclone Ditwah, a disaster that claimed more than 600 lives and caused widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage across the island.
The Sri Lanka Navy announced that the recognition was extended to international partners who played a vital role in rescue and relief operations during one of the country’s worst natural disasters in recent years.
India’s INS Vikrant and INS Udayagiri were among the vessels acknowledged for their major contribution under Operation Sagar Bandhu, which provided emergency support as Sri Lanka’s disaster‑response capacity came under severe strain.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya personally expressed gratitude to diplomatic representatives of the assisting nations, highlighting the importance of international solidarity during national crises.
Cyclone Ditwah left a trail of destruction across multiple districts, displacing thousands and overwhelming local authorities. The government continues long‑term recovery efforts as affected communities rebuild homes, livelihoods, and essential infrastructure.
