COLOMBO – The Ministry of Environment has launched a major new task force to combat environmental crime across the country. The powerful unit is named “Wana Surakuma,” which means Forest Protection.

A New Fight Against Environmental Crime

The main goal of the Wana Surakuma task force is simple: stop environmental destruction.

This unit will quickly prevent and suppress all forms of environmental crime, including:

  • Illegal logging.
  • Wildlife poaching.
  • Other attacks on natural resources.

Integrated Forces Join the Fight

This new task force is highly integrated and powerful. It brings together officers from several key agencies:

  • The Department of Wildlife Conservation
  • The Department of Forest Conservation
  • The Police Special Task Force (STF)
  • The tri-forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force)

New Public Hotline: Report Crime Now

The Ministry is urging citizens to get involved. A 24-hour public hotline (1995) has been introduced for immediate reporting.

Use the hotline to report any incidents of:

  • Forest destruction.
  • Illegal timber transport.
  • Any other environmental harm.
