In a decisive move to curb inflation and ensure affordability of staple foods, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka has announced new maximum retail prices (MRPs) for several varieties of imported rice. The regulation, effective from October 21, 2025, was issued under Gazette No. 2459/12 and is legally binding for all importers, distributors, and retailers across the country.
New Maximum Retail Prices for Imported Rice (Per Kilogram)
Rice Variety New Price Ceiling
Imported Raw Rice (Kekulu) Rs. 210
Imported Nadu Rice Rs. 220
Imported Samba Rice Rs. 230
Imported Ponni Samba (GR 11) Rs. 240
Imported Keeri Ponni / Paal Ponni Rs. 255
Purpose of the Price Control
The CAA stated that this measure aims to:
- Prevent excessive pricing of essential food items.
- Protect consumers from market volatility and unfair trade practices.
- Ensure food security by maintaining affordability of rice, a staple in Sri Lankan households.
Retailers and suppliers are now legally obligated to adhere to these price ceilings. Non-compliance may result in penalties under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003
