The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has rolled out a new tariff scheme aimed at promoting the use of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) among solar power producers in Sri Lanka.

Under this initiative, electricity discharged from battery systems between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM—the national grid’s peak demand hours—will be purchased at Rs. 45.80 per unit (kWh).

This move targets:

– Owners of ground-mounted solar PV plants

– Rooftop solar system users

The goal is to encourage daytime solar energy to be stored and released during high-demand evening hours, enhancing grid stability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

CEB says the tariff is part of a broader push to modernize Sri Lanka’s energy landscape and incentivize clean, flexible power solutions.
