Colombo | October 14, 2025 — The Sri Lankan government has announced a new regulation requiring all foreign tourists to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to arrival, effective October 15, 2025.

The move is part of a broader effort to streamline immigration procedures, enhance border security, and improve visitor data management.

What’s Changing?

  • Mandatory ETA before arrival: Tourists must apply online and receive approval before boarding flights to Sri Lanka
  • No more on-arrival ETA: The previous option to obtain ETA at the airport will be discontinued
  • Applies to all nationalities eligible for ETA, including those from Europe, Asia, and the Americas

How to Apply

  • Visit the official ETA portal: www.eta.gov.lk
  • Submit passport details, travel itinerary, and payment
  • Receive confirmation via email within 24–72 hours
  • Print or save the ETA approval to present at immigration

Why It Matters

  • Reduces airport congestion and processing delays
  • Enhances pre-screening for security and health protocols
  • Aligns Sri Lanka with global travel standards used by countries like Australia and Canada

Tourism Ministry Statement

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Tourism stated:

“This change ensures a smoother experience for travelers while strengthening national security. We encourage all visitors to plan ahead and complete their ETA applications before departure.”
